Why are there too sets of phases during meiosis, but only one during mitosis?

Mitosis is just for self renewal in the cells like skin cells but in meiosis it goes through the process twice so you can result in 4 daughter cells since this is the reproductive unit. Just like your punnet square has 4 offspring types this is what the 4 daughter cells are like but only one daughter cell is chosen.
